Tiny four-man midget submarines towed most of the way to their target, X-craft carried out Operation Source in September 1943, placing explosive charges under the battleship Tirpitz in her Norwegian fjord anchorage and crippling her for months - a mission for which two Victoria Crosses were awarded.
