A heavy, bolt-action anti-tank rifle issued down to infantry section level, the Boys could penetrate the thin armour of early-war light tanks and armoured cars but was already largely obsolete against up-armoured German tanks by 1940, and was progressively replaced by the PIAT from 1943.
