Built on merchant-hull frames at Kaiser Shipyards in barely over a year, the 50 Casablanca-class 'jeep carriers' were mass-produced almost like Liberty ships, screening invasion fleets and hunting submarines. Six of them, the escort carriers of Taffy 3, famously stood and fought off a Japanese battleship force off Samar in October 1944, losing ships but turning back the attack.
