The Crusader was Britain's principal cruiser tank of the desert war, fast but thinly armoured and mechanically unreliable in sand. It gave the November 1941 offensive that broke the siege of Tobruk its name, though its 2-pounder gun was already outclassed by German armour by the time of Gazala.
