Enigma machine
military cipher machine
The Kriegsmarine's four-rotor naval Enigma encrypted U-boat orders and reports, and was believed unbreakable. Bletchley Park's codebreakers, aided by captured machines and codebooks such as those seized from U-110, read this traffic for long stretches of the war, letting convoys be routed around wolfpacks.
