Cheap, small and based on a whaling-ship hull, the Flower-class corvette was never comfortable in Atlantic weather but became the backbone of convoy escort groups for the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy and other Allied navies, fitted with ASDIC and depth charges to hunt U-boats.
