The Gato-class boats carried the American submarine campaign that eventually strangled Japan's merchant fleet and sank vital tankers and warships, including the fleet carriers Shōkaku and Taihō, torpedoed by Cavalla and Albacore on the same day at the Philippine Sea, and the heavy cruiser Atago, Kurita's flagship, sunk by Darter on the way to Leyte Gulf. Early-war torpedo failures were fixed only after painful losses, after which the class became devastatingly effective. Twenty of the 77 built were lost during the war.
