Ise-class battleship
hybrid battleship-carrier
After the loss of four fleet carriers at Midway, Japan rebuilt Ise and Hyuga by removing their rear gun turrets and adding a flight deck and hangar for floatplane bombers, creating an unusual hybrid battleship-carrier. Chronic aircraft and pilot shortages meant neither ship ever operated its air group in combat, and both ended the war sunk at their moorings by American carrier air raids.
