I-19 fired one of the most devastating single torpedo salvoes of the war off Guadalcanal in September 1942, sinking the carrier USS Wasp and the destroyer USS O'Brien and severely damaging the battleship USS North Carolina with the same spread of six torpedoes. She was herself sunk the following year, a fate that met most of the Type B1 fleet boats that formed the backbone of Japan's submarine force.
