Built on a Sherman chassis with a fast-traversing but unarmored, open-topped turret, the M10 embodied the Army's tank-destroyer doctrine of hunting enemy armor with mobility and firepower rather than heavy protection. It was the most widely used American tank destroyer of the war before faster, better-armed types like the M18 supplemented it.
