Replacing the aging M3/M5 Stuart, the Chaffee packed a genuinely useful 75mm gun and torsion-bar suspension into a light tank that arrived just in time for the Battle of the Bulge. It proved so well balanced a design that it stayed in foreign service, including with French forces in Indochina, for decades after the war.
