The Betty's land-based bombers sank the battleship Prince of Wales and battlecruiser Repulse off Malaya in December 1941, the first capital ships sunk at sea by aircraft alone while under way. Its long range came from oversized unprotected fuel tanks that American pilots nicknamed the 'Flying Lighter,' and losses over Guadalcanal were severe. A G4M carrying Admiral Yamamoto was shot down over Bougainville in 1943.
