Mogami-class cruiser
heavy cruiser
Built as light cruisers to skirt the London Naval Treaty's gun-size limits, the Mogami class was designed from the outset so its triple 6.1-inch turrets could be swapped for twin 8-inch guns the moment Japan abandoned the treaty system, instantly reclassifying them as heavy cruisers. Mogami herself survived a collision with sister ship Mikuma during the retreat from Midway, only to be lost two years later at Leyte Gulf.
