Widely regarded as the best Japanese fighter to see large-scale service, the Hayate (Gale) combined speed, firepower and maneuverability that matched late-war American fighters when flown by a skilled pilot and fed good fuel. Wartime shortages of high-octane fuel and skilled machining, however, meant most Ki-84s in the field ran well below their design performance. Nearly 3,500 were built in barely a year.
