North American B-25 Mitchell

Sixteen B-25s flew off the carrier Hornet in April 1942 to bomb Tokyo in the Doolittle Raid, a mission the aircraft was never designed for but managed at the cost of every plane lost afterward. Modified with forward-firing guns for skip-bombing, Mitchells helped Fifth Air Force annihilate a Japanese troop convoy at the Bismarck Sea in March 1943. It remained a mainstay of low-level anti-shipping and close support strikes through the Southwest Pacific.
