Replacing the underpowered 2-pounder, the 6-pounder finally gave British and Commonwealth anti-tank gunners a weapon able to kill most German tanks at practical combat ranges, and it also armed the Churchill and Valentine as an up-gunned tank main armament through the desert and Italian campaigns.
