Vasily Degtyaryov's drum-fed submachine gun equipped Red Army units in the war's opening year, but its complex, expensive machined-steel construction could not be produced fast enough for wartime demand, and it was quickly succeeded by the simpler, stamped-steel PPSh-41 it had directly inspired.
