River-class frigate

convoy escort frigate

Larger, faster and better armed than the Flower-class corvette it succeeded, the River-class frigate (built also in Canada as the primary Royal Canadian Navy escort type) gave convoy escort groups the range and sonar performance needed to finally hunt U-boats to destruction as the Battle of the Atlantic turned in 1943.
