An evolution of the Myoko design with a distinctive, oversized bridge structure that gave the class a battleship-like silhouette, the Takao-class heavy cruisers carried heavier torpedo armament than their predecessors. All four fought at Leyte Gulf, where Atago was sunk by the submarine USS Darter and Maya by USS Dace in the Palawan Passage, before the battle even reached the Sibuyan Sea.
