The last Iowa-class battleship completed, Missouri shelled the Japanese home islands and screened carriers off Okinawa before her quarterdeck was chosen for the formal Japanese surrender ceremony on 2 September 1945, with General MacArthur presiding under the ship's guns in Tokyo Bay.
