Nicknamed the 'buzz bomb' or 'doodlebug' for its distinctive pulsejet engine, the unmanned V-1 was launched at London and later Antwerp from mid-1944. The engine cutting out signalled an imminent, silent final dive, a terrifying feature that made it as much a psychological as a physical weapon.
For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme.
