Faster than many contemporary fighters thanks to its slim, liquid-cooled-engine airframe, the Suisei (Comet, codenamed Judy) replaced the aging D3A as Japan's frontline dive bomber. It flew at the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf but arrived too late, and in too few capable hands, to reverse the carrier war. Late-production Judys were flown on one-way kamikaze missions.
