The three Yorktown-class carriers — Yorktown, Enterprise and Hornet — carried the Pacific Fleet's air power through the desperate first year of the war. Yorktown, patched up after Coral Sea damage in a frantic three-day repair, fought and was sunk at Midway days later; Hornet launched the Doolittle Raid and was later lost at Santa Cruz; only Enterprise survived to the end of the war.
