The Soviet Union's principal long-range bomber, the Il-4 flew the first Soviet air raids on Berlin in August 1941, launched from Saaremaa island in the Baltic just weeks after Barbarossa began, a morale-boosting reply to German bombs already falling on Moscow. It later served heavily as a night bomber and naval torpedo aircraft.
