SVT-40

An ambitious attempt to give ordinary riflemen semi-automatic firepower before the war, the SVT-40 was more sophisticated and harder to maintain than the rugged Mosin-Nagant it was meant to replace, and wartime manufacturing shortcuts made it prone to jamming in the hands of hastily trained conscripts. Production was scaled back once the simpler PPSh-41 submachine gun proved a more practical way to increase infantry firepower.
