Type 93 torpedo

Nicknamed the Long Lance by postwar historians, the oxygen-fueled Type 93 outranged and outpaced any torpedo in Allied service by a wide margin, striking from distances American commanders assumed were far too great for a torpedo threat. It devastated Allied cruiser and destroyer squadrons in the night surface battles off Guadalcanal, where its huge, mysterious explosions were initially blamed on land mines or coincidence rather than a torpedo no one believed possible.
