Vasily Grabin's ZiS-3 combined a light, cheaply produced carriage with a gun powerful enough to serve as both field artillery and, with special ammunition, a credible tank killer. It became the most numerous Soviet field gun of the war, with well over 100,000 built, and its simple welded construction let factories keep pace with catastrophic 1941 losses.
