175 Fletcher-class destroyers were built, more than any other US destroyer class, and they fought in nearly every surface and screening action of the Pacific war. Their radar and torpedo tubes made them the workhorses of the brutal night battles in the Solomons, and off Samar three of them charged Kurita's battleships to protect the escort carriers at Leyte Gulf. None of the class capsized despite the punishment many took.
