Named for defence commissar Kliment Voroshilov, the KV-1 carried armour up to 90mm that was effectively immune to German tank and anti-tank guns in 1941, forcing crews to call up 88mm flak or divebombers to stop single tanks. It was slow, mechanically unreliable and hampered by the same two-man turret crowding as the early T-34, and was phased out as the up-gunned KV-85 and IS series arrived.
