Landing Ship, Tank (LST)

amphibious landing ship

The LST's bow doors and shallow draft let it beach directly and drive tanks and vehicles ashore under their own power, underpinning every Mediterranean amphibious operation from Torch to Anzio and Dragoon. Chronic shortage of LSTs repeatedly forced Allied planners to choose between competing invasions.
