StuG III
assault gun / tank destroyer
Built turretless on the Panzer III chassis to keep silhouette and cost low, the StuG III began as infantry-support artillery and was progressively up-gunned into the Wehrmacht's most numerous armoured fighting vehicle and its most cost-effective tank killer, credited with destroying more Allied tanks than any other German type. Cheaper and faster to build than a turreted tank, it filled gaps in the panzer divisions as losses mounted.
