The Tiger's 88mm gun, adapted from the feared flak piece, could kill any Allied tank well outside the range at which its own thick armour could be penetrated in return, making single Tigers a serious tactical threat out of all proportion to their small numbers. Mechanically complex and expensive, fewer than 1,400 were built and it never achieved the mass presence its reputation implies.
