Dutch famine (the Hunger Winter)
17 September 1944 – 8 May 1945
After Market Garden's failure left the western Netherlands under occupation through the winter, a German transport embargo combined with an exceptionally hard winter to cause mass starvation in the still-occupied cities. Roughly 20,000 Dutch civilians died before Allied aircraft began dropping food under an informal truce in the war's last week.
