The Garand was the first semi-automatic rifle issued as standard infantry equipment to any army, giving American riflemen a rate of fire the bolt-action Arisaka could not match at close range in the jungle. Its distinctive metallic 'ping' as the empty en-bloc clip ejected became a signature sound of Pacific island fighting. General Patton called it 'the greatest battle implement ever devised.'
