Soviet Declaration of War on Japan

8 August 1945

Honouring the Yalta commitment to enter the Pacific war three months after Germany's defeat, Molotov informed the Japanese ambassador that the Soviet Union would be at war with Japan from 9 August. The declaration came two days after Hiroshima and ended Japan's hope of Soviet mediation.
