amphibious landing vehicle

The tracked amphibious tractor could crawl over a coral reef that stranded conventional landing craft, a lesson learned at terrible cost at Tarawa in November 1943 when boats grounded far short of the beach. From Kwajalein onward the Amtrac led every major Marine landing, and armed versions provided close fire support as the ramp-equipped LVT-4 let troops disembark straight from the vehicle. Over 18,000 were built in several variants.
