First blooded by Eighth Army at Second Alamein, the Sherman became the backbone of Allied armoured forces for the rest of the war on sheer numbers, reliability and ease of production. It remained outgunned by late-war German tanks, but its mechanical simplicity kept it in the field through Italy's mud and mountains.
